Newsies
Newsies were young children who earned money by selling goods such as: gum, candy, flowers, pencils, etc. Selling newspapers was really common. This job was very different than the others because the newsie was their own boss. They invested in their own newspapers and decided their own hours. The newsie decided how many newspapers to buy based on how well a salesperson they were, the weather, where they were going to sell, but especially on the headline of the day.
Most children newsies went to school all day, which meant they had a part time job. They were usually not poverty stricken kids, but children that wanted to earn a little side money. They were a part of the middle-class and went home to a decent house.
Children that were newsies were extremely independent. They also had to be street smart. They roamed around the streets unsupervised for as long as they pleased. This was one of the major concerns of congress because they feared what could happen to the kids as they crossed the streets or passed through dark alleys. As a result, girls were usually not allowed to be newsies, but there were a few.
